Beyond IKEA: The Best Places to Buy Furniture in Washington, DC

by wydlerbrothers on February 19, 2010

If there’s one thing my brother and I have learned working real estate, it’s that finding the right house is half the battle.  The other half, of course, is finding the right furniture for the house that suits your taste and doesn’t break the bank.

We’ve learned that there are two approaches to the “furniture search”: 1) let your tasteful spouse make all the decisions (aka “The Wydler Approach”) and 2) give your spouse great information for best local furniture finds (we’re helping you out here).

No weekend-killing jaunts to IKEA.  Just fun shopping for quality furniture to match your fine Washington-area home.

For antiques and vintage finds:

Kensington Antique Row – Slightly north of Bethesda in Kensington, MD just off Howard Avenue East are some of the oldest antique shops in the area, selling some of the finest in furniture, collectibles, and stained glass.   Don’t miss the myriad of shops on the West Howard Street as well, including The Great British Pine Mine.

Good Wood – Just one of many interesting furniture venues downtown in the “U Street” corridor.  Also don’t miss Ruff & Ready on 14th Street, or Miss Pixies in Logan Circle:

The Pear Tree Cottage – A gem of a store in Vienna, Virginia.

For a more updated look, we encourage you to explore these tried and true locations:

In Bethesda, try Urban Country, Random Harvest, and Design Within Reach.  All these shops also offer professional Design Services.

  • Cady’s Alley: Known as the Georgetown Design District, Cady’s Alley houses some of the finest home design stores including:  Ligne Roset, Janus et Cie, Baker, Illuminations Lighting and Waterworks.
  • In Virginia?   Try McLean Furniture Gallery: Not only does McLean Furniture Gallery offer a wide range of furniture options, but they also have on staff designers and interior decorators – seasoned pros – to guide you through the shopping process.

Of course, you have to find that house to put around those comfy chairs and flat screens (you can tell we’re thinking about March Madness already).  That’s where we come in. Our team is quickly becoming home of the best Bethesda, McLean, and Arlington realtors.  Give us a call, and we’ll show you why.
